CNC Machine Maintenance: 20 Essential Tips

Proper maintenance is the single most important factor in extending your CNC machine’s life. A well-maintained MAXIMA machine can reliably produce parts for 15+ years.

Daily Maintenance (Before & After Each Shift)

  1. Check lubricant levels – Verify spindle oil, way oil, and hydraulic fluid
  2. Clean the work area – Remove chips and debris from worktable and chip pan
  3. Inspect tool holders – Check for wear, cracks, or buildup
  4. Run warm-up cycle – 5-10 minutes at operating speed before production
  5. Verify coolant condition – Check concentration (5-10% for synthetic coolants)

Weekly Maintenance

  1. Clean spindle taper – Use lint-free cloth and alcohol
  2. Inspect way covers – Check for damage and leaks
  3. Check machine level – Use precision level on X and Y axes
  4. Empty chip pan – Complete cleaning of chip conveyor
  5. Test tool changer alignment – Run test tool change

Monthly Maintenance

  1. Replace coolant – Drain, clean, and refill
  2. Clean filters – Replace air, oil, and hydraulic filters
  3. Check spindle runout – Should be less than 0.002mm
  4. Lubricate linear guides – Apply manufacturer-recommended lubricant
  5. Backup parameters – Save all offsets and programs

Quarterly Maintenance

  1. Inspect spindle bearings – Check noise and vibration
  2. Calibrate axis positioning – Use laser interferometer
  3. Check belt tension – For belt-driven spindles
  4. Clean cabinet – Clean electrical connections and fans
  5. Inspect foundation – Check anchor bolt tightness

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Unusual vibrations or noises
  • Changes in surface finish
  • Dimensional accuracy degrading
  • Spindle temperature above 45°C
  • Leaking fluid or coolant
